The violence in Chicago has hit a new high. 19 people were shot and injured in overnight shootings in the Windy City last night.

Reports Chicago Tribune:
The overnight shootings peaked between 9:15 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. That’s when eight people, many of them teens, were shot at 79th Street and Essex Avenue about 9:30 p.m.
Then two men were wounded in the Ida B. Wells / Darrow Homes complex at about 9:25 p.m., police said. The men, 27 and 33, were shot in the 600 block of East 37th Street and taken to the University of Chicago Hospitals, police said. The younger man was shot in the head and the other in the right arm, Gaines said.
Around the same time, two other men were wounded in the arms in a drive-by shooting in the 2900 block of West 39th Place in the Brighton Park neighborhood.
About 15 minutes later, a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken to Jackson Park Hospital from the 7200 block of South Jeffery Boulevard, Gaines said. He was treated and released. The man told police he was talking on his phone when he heard a single shot and realized he was wounded.
Earlier Thursday evening, four men were wounded in a shooting in the Little Village neighborhood about 5:20 p.m. Thursday, police said.
They were walking in the 3200 block of South Kedzie Avenue when at least one person inside a vehicle with three others opened fire, police said, hitting the group. Three 19-year-olds and a 22-year-old were wounded.
Just after midnight, a 17-year-old was shot in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said. He was walking in the 7100 block of South Vincennes Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood when someone inside a passing car opened fire, police said.
Another 17-year-old was shot after 1:30 a.m. Friday in the 3500 block of West Grenshaw Street in the Homan Square neighborhood. He’s in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital. Someone walked to him and started shooting, police said.
And now…the video.
I see said the blind man. And now…
This is EbenGregory.com…telling you I want you to know something. I want you to know that Chicago perennially comes under fire for racially charged violence. I want you to know that in just the span of three days alone — March 16th-19th of this year — 41 people, mostly African-Americans, were shot and killed in Chicago with ten were killed in President Obama’s former neighborhood. I want you to know that in just the first three months of 2012, 109 people have already been murdered in the city of Chicago. I want you to know that nationally, nearly half of all murder victims are Black. And the overwhelming majority of those Black people are killed by other Black people. I want you to know that Black youth are drowning in a perfect storm of neglect, poverty, and mindless violence. Lastly, I want you to know that no group of people has ever willingly allowed its young people to devour themselves as senselessly as young Black males are currently doing in America. Gee whiz Black people, we gotta do better.

Sad situation and a vicious cycle. Its easy to say we got to do better. What are you doing to contribute to making things better? That all I hear “we got to do better”. If these guys knew any better, don’t you think they would be able to make better choices. They are a lost generation.
I mean…… There has always been senseless violence and killings in urban black communities for as long as it can stretch back and it is just utter ridiculous when you think about all of the young dying for nonsense. There are black people who try to battle this problem but are sadly out numbered. Everything starts from the home and if parents are not educating or teaching their children then the cycle continues. Aside from this….. The saddest thing I heard was when black people criticize Gabby Douglas after winning to Olympic gold medals because of how her hair looked? That was when I knew things were pretty ****’d up mentally and morally within the black communities. Rap music and videos ain’t helping none either. Rap artists are role models if they like it or not but refuse to take responsibility and make excuses on why they can continue to promote gang violence, drugs and genocide.
I’m a realist, if you enslave people, take them from there home, force them into a western culture and ideology, keep them in the ghetto’s and subject them to self hate their beauty and worth then ‘give’ them material things to aspire to via media let alone religion your gonna end up with Uncle Toms and porch monkeys… It ain’t out fault don’t you see that just keep your head down when the bullets our flying.
AMEN… Besides playing devils advocate, I’d like to say Thank You Eben G for posting this. Im love that you balance different types of Jewlery that you give to the people such as humor, social, and educational! I myself work with the youth and this crushes my heart but also gives me the passion and drive to do more to help out more youth and even in different states. So YES (SOME) NEED TO DO BETTER & (THANK YOU) FOR THOSE MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Peace with in…
We’ve got to do better. smmfh.
Erm…not to critique your journalistic style always enjoyed your column and the YouTube joints were classic but this article could have been easier to digest. The last paragraph was very poor, I want you to know that no group of people has ever let its young people devour etc etc….look if a white politician said that what would happen? you can’t demonise your own race then finish it up with black people we got to do better it’s like the most played out rinky dink answer that I keep reading over the blogosphere so Im gonn switch it up
I’m doing better, brothers and sisters are doing better
We will do better.
