College graduation is a day to celebrate accomplishments and toast to the future. Some people may even get thoughtful gifts from friends and family. For former Notre Dame basketball player Skylar Diggins, graduation day will certainly be unforgettable. Diggins currently plays guard for the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock and graduated Sunday from Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. Her agency, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, surprised her with quite the gift. Diggins left her graduation ceremonies and was surprised in the parking lot with a brand new white Mercedes, complete with a red bow and a handwritten note from Jay himself. Diggins posted a collage of photos of the car on her Instagram account with the caption, “Got surprised with a new Mercedes! Thanks so much to Jay and @rocnation, and @dancyautogroup!” (NESN)

Diggins became an official Roc Nation Sports client in late April.

When a former college basketball women’s star gets drafted into the WNBA, you rarely pay attention to what sports agency she signs with. However, this one should warrant a little bit of attention. Of course by now we know all about Jay Z and his latest sports endeavor — he’s become a sports agent and has already started RocNation Sports. Well on Thursday morning, Jay Z signed his latest client as Skylar Diggins reportedly agreed to be represented by RocNation. Diggins isn’t and won’t be the headline figure at RocNation, but it’s still an intriguing move. Diggins was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft less than two weeks ago and was widely considered to be one of the top three recognizable players in women’s basketball aside of Britney Griner and Elana Delle Donne. Buzz of baby No. 2 on board kicked into gear on Monday. Now Beyoncé has announced she’s canceling her Tuesday concert in Belgium because of dehydration and exhaustion. The singer’s publicist tells AP that Beyoncé has been advised by her doctors to rest. She was scheduled to perform at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp. The show will be rescheduled and tickets can be used at that show. Her next tour date is Wednesday at the same arena. The statement says “she is awaiting word from her doctors before making a decision.” (USA Today)

An interesting wrinkle arose on Friday regarding the emerging relationship between CAA and Jay-Z’s new firm, Roc Nation. Based on rules passed by the NFLPA in 2012, Jay-Z can’t recruit players to sign with CAA unless Jay-Z becomes an NFLPA-certified agent.

The concerns emerged because rival agents see the obvious problem with having Jay-Z recruit Giants receiver Victor Cruz to sign with CAA. The NFLPA reportedly has no problem with the connection, given Jay-Z’s established friendship with Cruz. Moving forward, however, Jay Z won’t be able to help close deals with CAA unless he’s certified.

The situation becomes even more challenging if Jay-Z doesn’t have an undergraduate degree. It’s unclear whether any exemption is available if he lacks that credential.

While details are still scarce, Young Hov has made strides to take his love for sports to the next level as a licensed sports agent.

Entertainer Jay-Z is applying to become a certified baseball agent, according to the Major League Baseball Players Association. Jay-Z, whose given name is Shawn Carter, submitted the application two days ago, MLBPA spokesman Greg Bouris said yesterday in a telephone interview. Bouris said there was no timetable for the union to process the application. (Business Week)

The news comes just days after reports of Jay starting the process to give up his stake in the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets flooded the Internet.

Entertainment mogul and rapper Jay-Z has started the process of divesting his small share of ownership with the Brooklyn Nets to extend his Roc Nation Sports representation business into basketball, sources told Yahoo! Sports. Jay-Z – whose real name is Shawn Carter – owns less than 1 percent of the Nets, but has been a central public figure in the franchise’s marketing and move from New Jersey to Brooklyn. Selling his share of the Nets is a necessary prelude for Jay-Z to obtain his National Basketball Players Association certification as an agent. Dash’s timeline is a ripe breeding ground for controversial statements, especially after her strange endorsement of GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney last year. Her latest salvo was a slight critique of Jay and Beyoncé’s recent (and federally-endorsed) trip to Cuba. This time, Dash not only throws a touch of shade on Beyoncé by not mentioning her name, she flat out calls the pair supporters of communism.

Jay-Z – whose real name is Shawn Carter – owns less than 1 percent of the Nets, but has been a central public figure in the franchise’s marketing and move from New Jersey to Brooklyn.

Selling his share of the Nets is a necessary prelude for Jay-Z to obtain his National Basketball Players Association certification as an agent.

NBA rules mandate that no one individual affiliated with a player representation company can have an ownership stake with an NBA team.

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation company has partnered with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to launch a sports representation business that recently secured New York Yankees star Robinson Cano.

The process is expected to be completed in time for Roc Nation to compete for players entering the June NBA draft, but there’s no guarantee of the timing, sources said. Those within Roc Nation and the CAA alliance aren’t “chasing a clock on this,” one source said. “This isn’t about one draft, but taking the long view of the business.”

Rival agents are anxious over the possibilities of Jay-Z on the recruiting trail, believing the lure of his iconic business and cultural standing will have a major impact on attracting top prospects and current league stars.

CAA and Jay-Z are taking time to carefully formalize the arrangement on the basketball end, sources told Y! Sports, and are sensitive to making sure he exits the Nets partnership in a way that is respectful to the organization.

Among NBA, NBPA and Nets constituencies, there are several hurdles to overcome before a formal announcement will be made. Nevertheless, none are significant and Jay-Z’s certification as a player agent is a mere formality.

Much like the arrangement with CAA’s baseball side, Jay-Z will let the firm’s basketball agents handle contract negotiations and day-to-day business with athletes. The potential impact will come with athletes linking to Jay-Z’s global reach in marketing, entertainment and business.

According to reports, Republican members of Congress have reached out to the U.S. Treasury Department to find out if the superstar couple had a license to visit Cuba last week.

In a letter dated on Friday, U.S. Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart, asked Adam Szubin, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control, for “information regarding the type of license that Beyonce and Jay-Z received, for what purpose, and who approved such travel.” Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart represent districts in south Florida where there is a high Cuban-American population. “Despite the clear prohibition against tourism in Cuba, numerous press reports described the couple’s trip as tourism, and the Castro regime touted it as such in its propaganda,” the letter said. “We represent a community of many who have been deeply and personally harmed by the Castro regime’s atrocities, including former political prisoners and the families of murdered innocents.” (Yahoo News)

The music stars could face the wrath of having to pay a fine if things do not go their way.

The AP further reports that the State Department didn’t know about the trip prior. And, if the couple did not obtain the proper licenses to travel to Cuba, they could pay a fine. While the embargo has been in place for over 50 years, President Obama has made concessions for travel there for academic, religious or cultural exchanges. (MTV)

Cuban activist Maurico Claver-Carone publicly spoke out against the mega couple heading into the weekend.

Mauricio Claver-Carone, the D.C. director for the US-Cuba Democracy PAC — a group committed to fighting for democracy in Cuba — tells TMZ the A-listers should’ve educated themselves about what’s really going on there before taking photo ops. Justin Timberlake’s return to the music business is looking like a huge success. His new album The 20/20 Experience sold 968,000 copies in its first week out, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Tickets for his upcoming stadium tour with Jay-Z, dubbed Legends of the Summer, is outselling Jay and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne tour by a 5-to-1 margin according to StubHub.

The question nobody seemed to asking until now is what compelled the superstar singer/actor to suddenly make the decision to record a new album and hit the road for a massive tour after nearly seven years away from music.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the clock was ticking on a sizable advance given to JT by Live Nation.

In 2008 Live Nation and Justin began doing business. The concert industry giant first purchased Signatures, a company that licences Timberlake’s merchandise. Next LN agreed to make Justin’s tequila brand, 901, the official tequila of Live Nation venues.

In exchange JT committed to a tour. He was given a $20 million advance. $5 million of that he wouldn’t have to return as long as he completed the tour.

Fast forward to 2013 and LN was getting anxious and wanted JT to make good on their deal.

“There is a due date by which you have to start touring. At some point, [Live Nation] has to call in the loan,” a source told THR.

For a stadium tour JT needed a new album to make sure fans filled the seats, so he got into the studio with Timbaland to record The 20/20 Experience. Justin’s manager Johnny Wright told CNN the project was completed in just 20 days.

Typically, an album launch for a megastar of Timberlake’s stature would take a year to set up at radio and retail, in addition to recording time. But with 20/20, the public first got word of its March 19 release in January.

“Suit & Tie,” the lead single off of the album didn’t take off on radio as quickly as planned. Worried a stadium tour might not sell as well as expected, Live Nation reached a deal with Jay-Z to co-headline.

Their joint tour is expected to gross $60 million, which is more than enough to satisfy Justin’s financial obligation to Live Nation.

“Live Nation always envisioned an arena tour for Justin Timberlake. After their successful studio collaboration, Justin and Jay-Z approached us, and we are thrilled to promote their stadium tour,” a Live Nation rep told THR.

The 31-year-old singer credits her husband for making her who she is today. “I would not be the woman I am if I did not go home to that man. According to Dream, fans took Jay’s joke about his Grammy night head apparel way too far and do not know how much of a jokester Jigga really is.

“Me and that guy, we was already goofing off the whole night,” the singer/songwriter said when MTV News caught up with him backstage after his win. “Jay’s a funny guy, people don’t know that. Jay-Z has officially announced the signing of Timbaland to his Roc Nation label.

The Brooklyn, New York rapper broke the news on his Life+Times website, posting a picture of the two talking in the studio. “Roc Nation welcomes TIMBALAND to the family,” reads the caption.

The pair has worked together throughout their respective careers. In 1998, Timbo produced Jay’s hit “Nigga What, Nigga Who,” while he returned the favor for the following year’s “Lobster & Scrimp.” Collaborative hits also include “Big Pimpin,” “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” and “Off That” featuring Drake. Most recently, the Virginia native produced Justin Timberlake’s new single “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay-Z, and he expressed interest in recording a full-length LP with Hov.

Most recently, Roc Nation signed M.I.A., Meek Mill, Elijah Blake and Jahlil Beats to subsets of the company including the label and management.

While scholars furiously debated whether the pop diva potentially betrayed the nation by maybe-maybe-not lip-syncing the National Anthem, the couple cleared a major hurdle in their quest to turn their baby daughter’s name into a brand. On Tuesday, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office posted notice that the superstars’ application to trademark “Blue Ivy Carter” faces no opposition. (Multiple news outlets incorrectly reported last fall that the Carters’ claim had been denied, which was, of course, absurd: Jay-Z and Beyonce never lose.)

It’s not over yet: The next step is to prove within three years that they are using the trademark for the various purposes sought — i.e., skin cream, music, key chains, eyeglasses, strollers, scrunchies, software, or teething rings, among other products. Their lawyer did not respond for comment.

New watch alert… HUBLOT! According to reports, Beyonce Knowles plunked down a whopping $5 Million to buy husband Jay-Z Hublot’s Big Bang timepiece.

The extraordinary timepiece, which has been dubbed The $5 Million Watch by Hublot due to its price, is set with 1,282 VVS G color diamonds.

The Big Bang was put on display at the BaselWorld show earlier this year and was said to be the most expensive watch exhibited at the show which is famous for its luxury timepieces.

The $5 million” a watch comprising no less than 1,282 diamonds.

“This is the most precious watch ever created by Hublot and its long-standing partner, Atelier Bunter in Geneva,” said Hublot.

The piece is the result of 14 months work, including that of a “master-cutter” from New York who fashioned the largest stones.

Jean-Claude Biver, president of the watch company, said it would be difficult to make a more expensive watch “because the surface of the watch is limited.”

RAP superstar JAY-Z is undoubtedly one of the most influential men in the US at the moment.
His fingerprints are all over most of the best hip hop in the charts and he even helped his buddy BARACK OBAMA get re-elected last month.

But not content with his already considerable sway over the nation, he has now headed to Hollywood to have his say in the movie industry.

He is the musical supervisor on upcoming LEONARDO DICAPRIO flick The Great Gatsby – an adaptation of the 1925 F Scott Fitzgerald book to be released in the spring.

The movie is based in 1920s New York but director BAZ LUHRMANN wants to set it to great modern music – like he did when he teamed up with Leo on 1996 smash Romeo + Juliet.

So he has signed up Jay-Z to oversee the soundtrack to feature tunes from the New York rapper and other hot new talent chosen by the pair.

Perhaps we should start calling him The Great Jay-Z.

Robert De Niro and Jay-Z got into a tense beef at Leonardo DiCaprio’s birthday bash the other night, when De Niro called the rapper disrespectful, Page Six can exclusively reveal.

Spies say “Godfather II” and “Taxi Driver” star De Niro gave Jay a dressing-down in a roomful of celebs including Martin Scorsese because the rap mogul had refused to return De Niro’s calls.

Sources add that Jay tried to joke his way out of the situation, and even his wife, Beyoncé, tried to intervene, but De Niro wouldn’t back down.

“Bob was sitting at a table, and when Jay-Z went over to say hello, De Niro told Jay that he never called him back,” a source says.

A spy then overheard De Niro complaining to the rapper, a fellow TriBeCa resident, about a song Jay-Z agreed to record for the Tribeca Film Festival. De Niro had reached out to discuss further details, but Jay never returned his calls.

Beyoncé and hubby Jay-Z have lost their legal bid to trademark their baby daughter Blue Ivy’s moniker on account of a Boston-based event planning firm, which has been going by the name Blue Ivy Events since 2009.

The superstar couple filed a trademark application shortly after Blue Ivy’s birth in January 2012 reportedly because Beyoncé wanted to put out a line of children’s clothing.

However, according to the Boston Herald, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office sent the hip-hop royals a letter turning down their petition to retain “Blue Ivy” for their own business ventures and siding with Blue Ivy Events owner Veronica Alexandra, who was forced to defend her company’s good name.

The ruling means Blue Ivy Events can continue to operate under its current designation. But the firm doesn’t hold anything against Bey and Jay, posting a photo of the pair on its site with the caption, “Congrats to our SOUL MATE Couple with Baby Blue Ivy!!!”
